Algolia Places was an address autocomplete solution powered by the famous Algolia search engine and loved by developers. It eventually got sunset on May 2022, forcing its customers to compromise with other solutions.
We, two former employees, took on a mission to revive Algolia Places, and bring it further, making it a full geocoding service: meet PlaceKit!
Is Algolia Places discontinued?
Yes, and not merely deprecated: Algolia sunset Algolia Places in May 2022, the API stopped serving results, and its users had to migrate to other solutions. PlaceKit is its successor, built by two former Algolia engineers, one of whom led Algolia Places: worldwide address autocomplete and two-way geocoding in a single API, still powered by the Algolia search engine, with JavaScript and React autocomplete libraries and the first 10,000 requests free every month.

We built PlaceKit to be the closest one: the same Algolia search engine under the hood, the same typo-tolerant address autocomplete, plus back-end geocoding, reverse geocoding, live patching and a store locator (beta) that Algolia Places never had.
